You measure AI visibility by direction, not by a fake prompt-position number, because answers are personalised and the queries are invisible. This is the part the tools get wrong, and the part that keeps teams chasing a metric that does not exist.

Why prompt-tracking is only half the story
These models personalise. The moment an assistant understands a user, it tailors what it cites to that person. So a tool telling you that you appear for a fixed list of prompts is showing you a snapshot, not the truth. Once the assistant knows the user, it may cite something else entirely, and you will never see it. There is no rank one to protect, so stop measuring like there is.
What to actually watch
Three directional signals. First, whether you appear as a cited source across your occasion cluster over repeated checks, accepting that it will vary. Second, referral traffic arriving from AI platforms in your analytics. Third, and most important, conversions from that traffic. Swashaa is the example I keep coming back to: a 15 to 20 percent lift in conversions from GEO platforms overall, and a 20 to 25 percent rise from ChatGPT on bracelet for men and bracelet for women. Those are real outcomes, not prompt positions.

A measurement setup that respects reality
Track AI referral sources in GA4. Monitor brand mentions across the web. Run a periodic manual sweep of your real occasion questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, logging whether you show up and where, as a trend rather than a score. Direction over time is the signal. Anything more precise than that is pretending.

Common questions
Can I track my ranking in ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Not as a fixed number. Answers are personalised and the queries are invisible, so any tool selling a clean prompt-ranking report is showing you half the story.
What should I measure for AI visibility instead?
Direction. Whether you appear as a cited source across your occasion cluster over time, referral traffic from AI platforms, and most importantly conversions from that traffic.
What does a realistic result look like?
For one client, Swashaa, it was a 15 to 20 percent lift in conversions from GEO platforms overall, and a 20 to 25 percent rise from ChatGPT on bracelet for men and bracelet for women.
